OBJECT: CONFUSION BETWEEN BUILDING PRODUCTS 0F CANADA CORP. AND BRITISH PETROLEUM

Dear customers,

Over the past few weeks, a number of our customers have expressed their concerns over the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and wondered if there is a link between our company, Building Products of Canada, and British Petroleum (company that owns the leaking Deepwater Horizon wellhead).

There is absolutely no connection between the two companies. Building Products of Canada Corp. is a private company that has been serving the construction industry in North America for the past 100 years. It has never been connected to British Petroleum (a publicly-traded multinational oil company with its headquarters located in London, England). It is one of UK’s largest corporations.

The confusion is understandable. Both companies use the abbreviation BP to refer to their respective company names and both companies have the letters ‘BP’ in their logos, though the format and appearance are clearly different. Adding to the confusion is the fact that many of BP’s products, like its roof shingles, use asphalt, a petroleum bi-product. We purchase our asphalt from a variety of sources, none of which include British Petroleum.

This confusion has been especially disconcerting for us because we have been working diligently for so many years to have the smallest environmental footprint possible and to be a major contributor to eco-energy friendly construction. We know that integrity is one of the reasons you do business with us.

We hope that this letter puts the confusion to rest. If you have questions about this letter or about other matter, please do not hesitate to contact your local BP representative.

Regards,

Yves Gosselin
